Give and Get All in Seward

The sun was out in Seward today, the temperature was a balmy 40-ish so it made for a great combo.

While we are working hard on our to-do list for next season we may just have to take a little break to look into some fun events coming up.

There are some great activities coming up this month in Seward. One of my favorite charities is having a fund raiser.

The Seward Animal Shelter is having their Pawsghetti Dinner on Nov. 10th.  Dog's are very special to us, that's why when a guest requests to stay at our cabins with their dog we charge a fee of which a portion is used to purchase something special for our furry friends at the shelter. If you are around stop in for a great meal and a great cause.

On Nov. 30th Seward holds the annual Holiday Arts and Craft Fair. You can find some awesome one of a kind gifts for the up coming holiday season.  Heck, while your in town be sure to check out some of the unique shops.  You'll get all your holiday shopping done in one day!

The Autumn Leaves are Falling

As we enjoy the beauty of the fall season changes are edging their way into winter.  We have had a dusting of termination dust on the mountain tops and its working its way down to turn our town into a winter wonderland.

Our thoughts turn to the upcoming activities such as Halloween events, Thanksgiving with family and friends,  Seward’s Old Fashioned Christmas festival and holiday weekend, New Years Eve and the Polar Bear Jump on Jan. 19th.

We look forward to hearing from you over the winter months.

Be sure to come on over and like us at our facebook page https://www.facebook.com/SewardCabins to keep up with daily events. We would love to see you post your updates, photos and videos too.  Post your Halloween photos. We love Halloween. :)

Rain Rain Go Away...

Its been a rough week on the peninsula.  Rain, rain and more rain is wreaking havoc all throughout the area.

Roads flooding, levies compromised, power outages, bridges washing away or damaged, landslides, railroad damage, you name it.

Thankfully today the rain has stopped and the wind is calm so clean up can begin again.

I wanted to take this opportunity to thank all the hard work and long hours that the crews and emergency people  have been putting in to keep Sewardites safe and taken care of during this tough time.  Especially the guys or gals that run the bulldozer in Lowell Point Creek, all I can say is,  wow, nerves of steel! If I ever find out who you are and I see you in the Yukon, you my friend are getting a beverage on me.

I have complete faith that the awesome people of Seward will jump right back in to get things back to normal as quickly as possible.

Thanks to everyone's positive thoughts and prayers.

Labor Day ? Already...

Its almost here folks, Labor Day.  Another summer whizzed by, how does that happen.  Seems like there is so much to do in and around Seward and so little time.  I guess that's what keeps people coming back.

What are you plans for the long weekend?

That's not to say that Fall around here isn't just as amazing, in fact in a lot of ways its more amazing.

Any mushroom hunters out there?

Here are a few shots of mushrooms that I took last fall. One mushroom in the neighbors yard was at least two feet tall and I'm not exaggerating.

Seward Local Catches 50k

Congratulations to Sewards own Micheal Rogers.  Rogers is a hometown angler that caught the  $50,000-tagged salmon in the Seward, Alaska, Silver Salmon Derby.

Rogers has been fishing the derby since he was a child.

Seward - Temperate Rain Forest

Some folks don't know this about Seward but we are in a temperate rain forest.

What that means is that the annual Temperature is between 39 and 54. That's not to say that we don't get awesome sunny warm days, because we do. Just not as many as other places.

It also means we get lots of rain and have lots of trees (hence the name "rain forest". The combination is why Seward and Alaska is one of the most beautiful places on Earth.

So why am I telling you all of this? Because we want you to have the best time of your life while your visiting. To have the best time of your life you need to be comfortable. To be comfortable you need to dress for the weather. So here are some tips.

Layers of clothing. It probably won't be very warm but it definitely can be cold. Prepare and you'll be happy you did. Fleece, windbreakers, sweat shirts... I got an awesome Alaska sweatshirt at Megan's Place down on Fourth St.
Personal tip: Smart wool socks!

Waterproof gear is the best. A good rubberized coat and rain pants can be your best friend. I bought a great set at Helly Hansen last season.

Good hiking boots or shoes that you don't mind getting muddy and have good traction for standing on the boats. Note: from my own personal experience buy your shoe/boots a head of time and wear them frequently before your trip  to make sure you like them and they fit well. There is nothing worse then breaking in a pair of boots on the trail or a hard day of shopping and ending up with a blister.

When you are out on the water its going to be breezy so you will want a windbreaker or your rubberized rain coat will work as well, a hat and (if you are like me and chill easily) a light pair of gloves. Maybe a pair of fingerless ones so you can still work the camera, eat and drink.

There's a Helly Hansen store, Fish House, Brown and Hawkins and other places to buy gear in town should you need it.

Once you are dressed properly you can relax and have the time of your life!

Have you been to Alaska? What tips do you have to share? Tell us.

Welcome to Millane's Serenity by the Sea

Our new sign, sign hanger and our tree frog totem.

The sign hanger and tree frog totem were made by my husband Thom Sr. and the sign was painted by RC my daughter's fiance.

It doesn't show up very well in this photo but if you look closely at the hanger above the sign you can see our name.

A lot of preparation and a few minor repairs to get the cabins all nice and cozy for our guests.

Everyone is working hard to be ready to open on May 7th.

Watch our facebook page and website for random specials.   https://www.facebook.com/SewardCabins and www.SerenityByTheSeaCabins.com As always we have special early and late season rates.

Not a very good photo but as you can see we have put in brand new windows in cabins 2 and 3.

Just a quick update from inside.

The BreakUp is on, Spring is here, the temps are rising and the snow is melting at about 1/2 an inch a day for now. The warmer it gets the quicker it melts. Duh, like I had to tell you that!  Anyway, this is the current view on Shady Lane.

Typically we see the Eastern Gray Whales migrating back to their feeding grounds in Alaska.

There  only about 130 Western Gary Whales left.

Its a dog sled race that runs from Willow Alaska to Nome Alaska about 1200 miles.

There is much more involved, to much to go into here.

To find out more about it you can visit the official Iditarod website at  http://iditarod.com/  or https://www.facebook.com/Ididaride  facebook page for updates on this years race which is underway.

Junior Iditarod

Today is the last day of the Junior Iditarod.

Congratulations to all the young men and women that participated.

It says al lot about a person that can make the commitment to undertake something like this. You all deserve a pat on the back.

The last update put 15 year old Benjamin Lyon in the lead.

To keep up to date with the standings visit http://www.jriditarod.com/index.php3

The Iditarod starts on March 3rd and the Fur Rondy is going on right now.

Being as all the talk is about the Iditarod, this week we would like to feature IdidaRide Sled Dog Tours as the "Must Do" thing to put on your to-do list when you visit Seward Ak.
